Influence on the blood gas following apnea during induction of anesthesia

Abstract
Pulmonay emphysema is defined as a pathologic basis, so the diagnosis of emphysema in vivo has its own limitation. Simple chest X ray and pulmonary function test(PFT) have been said to be poorly sensitive in the detection of early and mild forms
of
emphysema. Recently, with its ability to show the fine anatomical structure of the lung, high resolution computed tomography(HRCT) has been extensively studied in the emphysema. We have collected 30 patients with various lung diseases who were
taken PFT
and HRCT concurrently. Using a visual scoring method, we compaired the emphysema score in HRCT with the PFT results. Although we could not evaluate the diffusion capacity nor any pathologic specimen, we concluded that there were significant
correlation
between the emphysema score and % predicted FEV1/FVC, Vmax50. The correlations were better in those who showed normal FEV1/FVC, and the regression lines tended to be steeper in non-obstructive group than those who showed obstruction, which might
be
reflecting the possible role of HRCT in detecting the early stage of emphysema.
